Water by touch, not by calendar

A small check can prevent a soggy pot.

Before watering, feel the growing medium below its surface and lift the pot if practical. A light container and dry medium may signal a need for water; damp soil can wait. Rain outside does not always reach a covered porch.

Use containers with drainage holes and empty standing water from saucers. Water thoroughly when needed and let excess drain. Adjust to the plant, pot size, weather and growing medium rather than treating every container alike.
